Identity theft, unfortunately, is a growing problem all over the world but especially so in places like North America and Europe where the internet has really boomed out and exceeded all of the expectations that it initially had. With the internet age of anonymous web browsing and IP concealment, it has become very easy for someone to steal the identity of another person and then use that identity against them in order to steal their money, use their credit cards and do a number of other things that can really end up making a person’s life miserable if they are unable to do anything to stop the person from stealing their identity. There are a number of different ways in which identity theft can take place and some of the more common ones are as follows:
Subscription changes: If a person wants to get a subscription that the other person has, then they might attempt to steal that person’s identity in an attempt to get the address for the subscription changed from the real person to the identity thief. This is the most common form of identity theft in that it can apply to magazines, newspapers, mail or anything else that you can think of. The address change scheme is one that has been going on well before the internet age, but now with the easier access to information that the online world has provided it has made it quite a bit easier for identity thieves to use the address change in order to pry into the private lives of an innocent human being.
Benefit changes: A lot of people in the world today have some kind of benefit that they are getting. Whether it is reimbursement through their insurance, regular payments for a disability or alternatively some sort of social security benefit that they now get because they are retired, the benefits that people get are prime target for identity thieves because people that usually get benefits are sometimes people that thieves figure are not going to be able to fight back that well (i.e. people who have had medical problems, people with a permanent disability or alternatively senior citizens). The identity thief, if they decide to go for the benefit changes scheme, will try to get a person’s full name and their date of birth in order to make the changes through the mailing system of the organization that is responsible for administering that benefit to the person that has just been the victim of theft. This is something that unfortunately happens all too often nowadays.
Monetary changes: While these are not the most common form of identity theft, at the same time they are the form that tends to get all of the attention. The attention inherent to identity theft goes to these changes because they are the ones that affect a person’s life the most deeply. Changes to credit card information and debit card information and then the using of those two pieces of monetary access can literally ruin another person’s life and that makes this the most serious form of identity theft.
